Battle games are about holding a line. Something is coming toward you in waves, and you have to decide where to spend what you have before it arrives. That covers tower defence, base building, army and squad management, siege games, and last-stand survival where the only question is how long you last.
The tension is different from a shooter. In a shooter the mistake and the punishment are half a second apart. Here you make a bad call — the wrong upgrade, a gap on the left flank — and it costs you four minutes later, when it is too late to undo. That delay is the whole appeal, and it is why these hold up to replaying: you can usually name the exact turn you lost.
They run in the browser with nothing to install and are mostly mouse-driven, so desktop suits them best. Tower defence is the friendliest way in — the loop is short enough to see your mistake while there is still time to fix it.
